Tom Ackerson, Director, Engineering Sciences
Thomas N. Ackerson is a Senior Metallurgist in our
Metallurgical and Materials Engineering practice area,
serves as Practice Director of Automotive Consulting, and
heads MME’s Birmingham, Alabama office. Mr. Ackerson has
over 17 years experience in metallurgical and materials
testing, corrosion testing, failure analysis, and has won
multiple international awards in the field of metallography.
He is an active member of ASM International, serving
nationally on their Failure Analysis Committee and locally
as Chairman of the Birmingham Chapter.
Mr. Ackerson’s expertise spans the power generation, transportation and general manufacturing industries. Immediately prior to joining MME, he was the Engineering Manager of Southern Research Automotive, which was acquired by MME in December 2005. He performed considerable research in the field of advanced solid-state joining methods for high temperature super alloys during his tenure at the Babcock & Wilcox Company. Mr. Ackerson has performed hundreds of materials testing and failure analysis investigations during his career, and is a licensed professional engineer in the States of Alabama, Georgia and North Carolina.
