Contractors at a new vehicle production facility needed quality control assurance on a section of a slab on grade. Not only would it be very costly to make random cores and repairs on the ceramic-coated slab, this method would require a large number of cores to get a fairly comprehensive assessment of slab thickness distribution.
GPR was used to generate 2-dimensional depth profiles across the whole slabs in a grid pattern. This showed not only the slab thickness along several lines and the profile of the metal reinforcement in the slab as well. Thickness values at the grid line intersections were used to generate a slab thickness contour map of the whole slab. This operation was relatively quick and totally nondestructive.
